Wondering where you can play tennis or football in Hangzhou? Looking for a great jogging spot other than around West Lake? Then perhaps the answer lies here. On May 1st of this year, Hangzhou’s first recreational theme park opened to the public – Chengbei Sports Park (城北体育公园). Located in the Xiacheng District of Hangzhou, the park occupies 45,000 square metres and offers a site where nature, sports and recreation are combined into one. Besides its football pitches, sand volleyball court, swimming pool and numerous other sporting facilities, the park offers both a pleasant get-away from the built-up, urban areas of Hangzhou, and also an alternative to visiting West Lake when craving nature and exercise.

The new park is great if you want to come along with a group of friends and take part in various sports activities, or if you simply want to stroll about in a park-like setting. Of the park’s total area, 34,000 square metres are taken up by greenery, with lots of beautiful flowers planted throughout the grounds. A man-made lake can be found on the south-west side of the park and an ecological park suitable for walking, jogging, practicing Taiqi etc. surrounds Chengbei Park on all sides.

Chengbei Sports Park includes a comprehensive stadium that can sit 1,100 people, eight outdoor tennis courts, four basketball courts, a croquet court, a volley ball court, an eight-lane swimming pool suitable for all levels of swimmers, a gym, five football pitches and one 5-a-side football court with artificial grass that can be played on any time of the year.

Since opening, access to the park has been free of charge; however a small fee may be implemented after the trial period, but this has yet to be confirmed. Some of the facilities have limited access such as the croquet court and the swimming pool is only open during the summer. However, the football, basketball, tennis, volleyball courts and gym are all open for public use.
