While the thought of buying DVDs and watching your favourite flicks from the comfort of your own home is a tempting option in here in China, no wide screen TV or laptop can deliver the magic and power of a movie as great as in the cinema. The standards of China’s cinemas have come a long way in recent years, and even the foreign movie selection process shows signs of improvement – despite the limited numbers of foreign movies being screened here each year.

So why not treat yourself to a night at the movies right here in Guangzhou? Yes, the foreign flicks do usually have subtitles, and no, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg – especially if you know when to go and what deals apply to you. This article explains who can get discounts and when at Guangzhou’s movie theatres, and is therefore your guide to the affordable world of cinema in Guangzhou (offers valid at time of writing, but may be subject to change).

All local primary, secondary and university students under the age of 23 can enjoy 30-40% discounts on cinema tickets all day, every day with valid student ID. People over the age 60 get 10 RMB off cinema tickets after 12:00 whenever they show their valid IDs.

Now for those of us in that age bracket where discounts don’t come as easy:

Monday: customers with membership cards can enjoy a 30-40% discount in addition to the existing 15-30% membership discount.
Tuesday: movies are free all day for ladies on Tuesdays provided they are accompanied by a man (and a deposit required equivalent to the price of the ticket is required);
Wednesday: 30-40% off for everyone all day!
Mon, Thurs and Fri: 30-40% off before 18:00
Sat and Sun: 30-40% off before midday
