See Nightlife in Guangzhou Part 1 here.
The overseas Chinese village, including the area around Garden Hotel, was one of the first to accept foreigners after China had been opened up to the outside world. Quite naturally, as foreigners are notorious party animals and heavy drinkers, a vivid bar and nightclub scene came to life, and some of the bars within this area have been established before most of us expats and foreign entrepreneurs came to discover what Guangzhou has to offer. Here is a selection of some of the most popular nightclubs there, each of them just minutes apart by foot.

1) Velvet ClubView In Map
Though rather small, Velvet is one of the most popular clubs in this area. The interior features a pink design and dancing performances. Every once in a while, internationally famous DJs find their way to this venue. A regular event called "Single & Sexy Fridays" is held every week. If you are looking for a match, Friday might be your lucky day.

2) PenthouseView In Map
Penthouse is one of the many small bars along Heping Road in the Chinese Overseas Village. You will usually hear a range of dance, techno and drum and bass music here. The second floor has a comfortable seating area for big groups. Alternatively, you can enjoy your drink on the outside terrace.

3) Gipsy KingView In Map
The Gipsy King tends to play R'n'B and Latin music and usually attracts a more "mature" audience. The interior resembles a style of rock bar that is quite rare in Guangzhou. Come here if you are mainly looking for a watering hole with decent prices, combined with music that will get your feet and hips moving (especially after the first few drinks). Be warned, however, that if you are not looking for pick-ups you might prefer different places.

4) 23 ClubView In Map
One of the bigger places mentioned here, 23 club has been around for a while and offers about 300 m2 for dancing and resting. With a glassy interior and house music played until late, this bar holds gay nights twice a month and as such is one of the few places in Guangzhou that digs into the local gay scene.

5) Wave BarView In Map
A member of the overseas Chinese village bar family, wave bar offers about the same amenities as its neighbour bars. Notable are the cocktail prices, which cost a very reasonable 35 RMB. Wednesday is ladies night and Thursday is booked for house music fans. On all other days, expect to meet one of the regulars coming here with their friends to get themselves drunk and the dice rolling.

6) Cave BarView In Map
Cave Bar is somewhat similar to Gipsy King in that its décor, the music styles and the audience is comparable, and both bars are right next to each other. Expect decent drink prices, a rather extensive seating area paired with a small dance floor and a selection of dishes including pizza when you get hungry. Once a week this bar hosts Latin music and Salsa dancers. Same advice here as for the Gipsy King: if you are not looking to pick-up, there might be better nightclub choices around.

7) China BoxView In Map
Black-leathered sofas, cushioned walls and pumping DJ music in yet another Heping Lu bar. Regularly, beautiful girls will perform live music here which you can mellow out to on the second level sofas. Drinks are reasonably priced and the audience is mostly young and Chinese. Don't be surprised if on weekends this place is packed, so come early to secure a good spot.
