1Net:

Internet is just plain cheaper and easier.
I never shop in places where there are no prices. Can't trust quality.

To Net below:

And on the internet you can trust quality?! Taobao is famous for its fakes...in everything.

The only trick is really to limit non-essential shopping in China altogether, and especially brand-name shopping.

Having said that, there are some good tips in this article. Thanks Beth.

Don't buy from Taobao. Never buy from places you can't trust

Do not forget the value of kindness . . . if you spend some time teaching their cute little daughter or keen minded son something special or new . . . a restaurant owner may wave the cost of a great noodle dinner AND th beer you opened to wash it down. It worked many places in Jiangxia, where I was a returnng customer (good for business) and in my case the only American !

A note about the eighth commandment shout be: Thou shalt inspect thy purchases before taking them home. All too often in many stores you get a slip of paper to take to the people who take your money and issue a receipt while the sales person bags or boxes the item you just bought. Check to make sure it really is the item that you wanted to buy and not something that was substituted while your back was turned.

Another tip for newcomers: in places like the Silk Street Market in Beijing, I just walk away - from EVERY purchase - no matter how low a price I get initially. The sellers almost ALWAYS call me back or come running after me, offering a lower price. -And if you don't get the price you wanted, look around for another shop. You can usually find the same thing somewhere else. Don't feel bad, no matter how disgruntled they seem at the final sale because they always make money on the sale. They won't sell it if they aren't making a profit.
