I’m moving to Hangzhou and I’m a Christian, will I able to attend services at a church?

Sicheng, Gulou, and Chongyi Church all hold regular Sunday services, for more information click here.

I’ve heard Shenzhen doesn’t have much traditional Chinese culture, what should I visit while I’m there.

Shenzhen is a young city – only several decades old – so it doesn’t have the same kinds of ancient monuments other Chinese cities do. It is vibrant city though, and there are two particularly interesting places for visitors who like things a little different or are tired of temples. Splendid China (Jinxiu Zhonghua) features replicas of Chinese landmarks including the Forbidden City and Great Wall; and Window of the World (Shijie Zhichuang) has scaled models of monuments from the rest of the world. See every famous landmark in the world in a single day! Great for photo ops. More here.

How do I get into Shanghai from the airport?

There are plenty of options – taxis, shuttle buses, regular trains, high speed mag-lev trains, you name it. All the info you on need getting in and out of Shanghai from Pudong and Hongqiao Airports is right here.

My friend keeps talking about how horrible the Spring Festival fireworks are. How long do they last?

In theory fireworks can, in most cities, only be lit off for all 16 days of the festival and ‘only’ from 7 am to 12pm. In reality, 17 hours is not enough for most people and you can expect to hear them all the time. After the first giddy days they will slowly begin to taper off.

I’m setting up a small business in Sanya and having a dreadful time trying to understand the tax laws and what I must do to be legal. Who can I contact – every time I call one bureau I get sent to another one?

Sanya has both a local and state taxation bureau but you will most likely want to start, if you haven’t already, with the local chamber of commerce. If you have a Chinese assistant you may want to have them go with you in person – it’s easy to be misunderstood on the phone and the websites are not always up to date. Info on those three bureaus and more here.
