My dear mademoiselle, perhaps you have already observed that in Casablanca, human life is cheap...

The one child policy should also be taken into consideration. It isn’t surprising that abortion is publicly advertised when it is an essential ingredient in population control.

While I think abortions should be avoided at all costs, I think it is silly for the US to criticize China for this because in the US the government subsidizes the cost of abortions to anyone who claims they cannot afford it. They pay the entire cost in many cases, which actually means other tax payers pay for someone they dont know to get an abortion. US is very hypocritical. (I am a US born US citizen.)

Many Chinese women don't use birth control because there's a common belief in China that birth control will do permanent harm to your body.

Well-said and agreed. About birth control, I'd also like to note that from personal experience, friends and friends of friends, etc, it seems that a big reason for Chinese women avoiding it is fear that it will adversely affect their reproductive systems. Mainly the idea that it will lead to an inability to give birth. So of course, more education! But again, put that into China's cultural context and I think that particular fear may have more sway on behavior as it would in the West.
