i think a big reason why most chinese girls don't like chinese guys is because many chinese guys remain virgins all the way into their late 20's, so not much experience there.. an then there's the problem below the belt.. hard to compeat with western guysNew full comment>>

Sadly Jim, what you say is all very true. I must say I have found racism and ignorance towards different peoples and cultures here in China with the largest population of any country in the world at a level I had hoped had long since vanished from world. It is a scary idea to think of such a nation gaining any kind of real power without growing up first and embracing...New full comment>>

Yes, I find that most things fly in the face of our understanding here. Sadly China is very much still stuck in the past and clinging to myths and superstitions. Mixed relationships can work, but I am not sure if they can bridge the wide gulf between Chinese culture and the modern world.New full comment>>

An interesting article. As an Englishman who has been happily married to a Chinese lady for 8 years and living in China for the last two of those I would just add one thing. Intonation! I would hazard a guess that over 80% of our arguments have originated in intonation. The use of the wrong tone of voice at the wrong time can, to a native speaker, indicate anger,...New full comment>>

I have been here for over 2 years and I agree 100% with Chaching. Manors are for the west, so just leave them in the west TIC. Watch and learn from the Chinese, then just do your own thing as to them you'll always just be a foreigner anyway!New full comment>>

To Jessica - THANK YOU - It was so nice to read this article and see that somebody has the same issues and it is not just me. I have lived here for 12 years, speak fluent Chinese, have a wife who speaks only a little English and two children that come with a mother-in-law as part of the package! I totally understand all the points you are making and it is clear you have either...New full comment>>

"some things that he may feel strongly about I may not- he just has to accept it, just as I accept things that I feel strongly about and he doesn't." So in other words he often says, "Yes dear, you're absolutely right. You're always right dear." fan you are a fine example of chinese thinking still being the stone ages. i was on a plane, the flight attendant told me i could not stow my laptop under the seat in front of me because i was sitting in an emergency exit seat. fair enough. so she took my laptop bag and placed it in the over head compartment . a few seconds later my laptop fell from the overhead compartment....New full comment>>

Two words: "hua qian", or spending money. Two of the girlfriends I have had here have always begged for Hua Qian. If I don't want to give them spending money, the call me "Kou Men" or "Xiao Qi". Meaning a tight wad. I tell them, in America, we call your type, "Gold Diggers". What the hell happened to love, trust, and romance? Why do so...New full comment>>

Language is the big one as it creates laziness in communication. I find I don't talk to my Chinese wife as much as I have talked to former girlfriends and such because it can be a hassle sometimes. Same with her. Not big issues, but I find I don't make passing comments about things because I have to explain them too much. But whatever, I still lover her and we have fun in...New full comment>>
