Introduction

Situated on the Pearl River Delta on the southern coast of Guangdong, Zhuhai is one of the original Special Economic Zones set up in the 1980s. Bordering Macau, Zhuhai has fully 690km of coastline and consists of 146 islands. Though a relatively small city by Chinese standards (1.3 million), Zhuhai is a magnet for foreign investment, due to its natural deepwater port, prime geographical location on the Pearl River, and well developed infrastructure.

Zhuhai is an attractive 'garden city' with plenty of parks and green space that attract people to the city, which boasts the ''Best Model of International Residential Environment Improvement'' accolade, awarded by the UN. With a pleasantly warm tropical monsoon climate, with clearly defined seasons, Zhuhai is a great place to visit, a fact picked up on by the government, which is currently in the midst of continuing to develop tourist spots, as well as exploring the options for the development of new attractions, such as nearby Hengqin and Dong'ao.

Because of its position on the Pearl River and the South China Sea, Zhuhai is a hub of maritime transportation and industry. Zhuhai is home to two international seaports, and has connections to Macau by road, and direct to Hong Kong's International airport by sea, with plans for a Zhuhai-Hong Kong-Macau bridge as part of the Pearl River Delta integration Plan.

A further advantage of Zhuhai's geographical setting is an abundance of fresh seafood, both fresh and saltwater. The local favorite here is the oyster, prized not only for its pearl, but for the succulent meat. Zhuhai is well known for its oysters, with restaurants that specialize in cooking them in almost every way imaginable. Most of the local cuisine takes advantage of it in some way, whether the humble snack vendor, or the finest restaurant in the best international hotel. Apart from oysters, delicacies such as shark fin, and Pearl River prawns abound. In addition, there is a booming eel industry, struggling to keep up with the demand from Japan, Macau and Hong Kong for Zhuhai eels.

Home to two international schools, Zhuhai also hosts local campuses for some of China's larger well-known universities, such as the Beijing Institute of Technology, and Beijing Normal University, Zhuhai shows that it is an educational center. Zhuhai's ultimate goal is to strengthen the professional talent pool in order to entice more high-tech and IT businesses to develop on the area.

There is no shortage of international goods in Zhuhai and the surrounding area. Western products and food can be purchased at centers such as Carrefour, or one could even zip across the border to Macau, or take the ferry to Hong Kong.

Zhuhai's annual average temperature is about 22°C. The temperature in January and February is the lowest, at around 10°C at night. The temperature goes up in April. From May to September it gets quite hot (up to the mid 30s) and there is more rainfall. The annual average precipitation is 1,700 to 2,300 millimeters, with winds blowing in from the southeast in the summer and the northeast in the winter. In the summer and autumn, the typhoon season hits the city. The average relative air humidity is 79%. Due to the very seasonal nature of the weather in Zhuhai, visitors should pay close attention to what clothing and protection from the elements is required for the time of year, and should take note that many forms of travel are cancelled during typhoons.
