Changchun is the capital city and center of politics, economy, science and technology and culture in Jilin Province. It is located in the middle of the Songliao Plain in Northeast China, with a temperate continental climate and pleasant scenery. The city is also one of the country's pivotal models for economic development. In 1989, 1992 and 1994 it was approved respectively as an independently planned city, a city under direct central government control and a city classed with authority to implement the state's opening up policies.
Changchun is also a major agricultural city in China. Located in a world famous corn belt, it is an important commercial grain base for China, dubbed the country's ''Northern Granary'' from early times. Its annual grain output is consistently over 7.5 billion kilograms.
Changchun is an important industrial base with a particular focus on the automotive sector and is thus known as China's ''Automobile City'', as well as a ''Film City'', ''City of Science, Technology and Culture'' and ''Forest City''. With a strong industrial base, abundant agricultural resources, advanced scientific and technological infrastructure and highly developed culture and education, the city is fast becoming one of the most modern cities in northeast Asia.
In 2006, Changchun realized a GDP of 174.12 billion RMB, up 15.4% from the previous year. Its economic aggregate was ranked 25th among all mainland Chinese cities. The industrial added value output of its primary industries, secondary industries and tertiary industries was 16.2 billion RMB, 85.18 billion RMB and 72.74 billion RMB respectively and the city invested 95.04 billion RMB in fixed assets.

Changchun has trade relationships with 153 nations and regions and stable trade and economic relationships with more than 60 nations and regions. In 2006, the city realized import/export volume of US$5.22 billion including US$3.67 billion in imports and US$1.55 billion in exports. Exports of state-owned enterprises totaled US$1.36 billion, that of foreign-invested enterprises totaled US$170 million and that of the domestic private sector totaled US$1.43 billion.
The top ten imports by volume were automobile spare parts, metal processing machine tools, auto and auto chassis, measurement instruments, spare parts for internal combustion engines, steel, models, switching and protection circuits, cables and wires, plastic and plastic processing mechanics. The top ten exports by volume were corn, clothes, auto and auto chassis, auto spare parts, wire and cable, furniture, beef, textiles, beans and edible oil seeds.
