Zhuhai: The basics
Located in southern Guangzhou Province 100km south of Guangzhou on the mouth of the Pearl River, the city of Zhuhai houses a population of about 900,000. The city was a relative backwater up until 1979, when the Zhuhai Special Economic Zone was founded. Today it is one of the fastest growing cities in the country.
Its success is largely based on its proximity to Macao SAR, as well as Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and other southern boomtowns. Its economy is export-oriented, and focused around household appliances, electrical components, bio-pharmaceuticals, software and petrochemicals.
Cultural and historic attractions in the town are few, but its tropical garden atmosphere is hard to beat, and then there's the food: oysters, crabs and lobsters are particularly delicious, and as Zhuhai is so close to Macao, Portuguese-style cuisine is becoming popular. Local Zhuhai products include processed seafood, pearls, oranges and litchis.
The tropical city of Zhuhai knows little of the cold - ''winter'' temperatures rarely dip below 7 C. Summer temperatures can hit as high as 36 C – but the heat can bring heavy showers and typhoons with it. Visitors should bring light raingear and umbrellas, and avoid going outdoors if a typhoon is forecast.
