Wuxi: The basics

Wuxi is a city of 4.5 million people in Jiangsu province, about 100km northwest of Shanghai. Situated on the shores of Lake Taihu and the Grand Canal, the city long ago had a canal culture to rival Suzhou's, but these days is more noted for its industrial muscle, which comes from IT, electromechanical integration and high-end textiles.

Wuxi has hot summers and cool to chilly winters, with plenty of Spring and Summer rain. As a tourist town, it is a good jumping-off point to explore Lake Tai, where Turtle Head Park is an especially popular destination. About 25km outside the town, the Lingshan Grand Buddha makes for a rewarding half-day excursion. Although it is a modern monument, it is a grand sight in an attractive setting.

The local cuisine has the lightness and sweet qualities of Jiangsu cooking. Two favorites are Wuxi Sweet and Salty Spare Ribs, which are delicious and filling, and Wuxi Roasted Duck, which is said to rival Peking duck for flavor!
