Introduction

Shanghai is well known for its vibrant nightlife, catering to all tastes - from elegant bars to crowded discos, from rock clubs to laid back cafes. Whether you want to cut loose or just relax, Shanghai after dark is something you simply have to experience.

When restrictions on bars were loosened, Julu Road was one of the first areas where they opened up; however, these bars were mostly supplanted by Hengshan Road, whose venues are more modern and convenient to the commercial center. Whether you prefer you nightlife sedate or on the wild side, you're sure to find someplace agreeable in Hengshan. Chinese and expat Yuppies, on the other hand, gravitate toward the generally upscale places on Maoming South Road. Judy's Too is located in this area, a local institution patronized by generations of expats. More recent additions include trendy clubs like Babyface and Face Bar.

Fuxing Park is another neighborhood with a busy scene. Most people call this ''French Garden,'' since it is a well preserved garden that attracts French expats and anyone else in a mood for romance. There are numerous clubs there including Park97, Guandi and Cash Box. And first-timers or short-term visitors will want to see Xin Tian Di in the evening. It's a bit pricier than other places, but you will get to experience Shikumens (a distinctive Shanghai style of tenement) updated for the new millennium. There are many wonderful Western and Chinese restaurants, bars, and, of course shopping venues to be found there.
