Too Much Pressure? Primary Student Begs Teacher for an 80 on Math Test

Too Much Pressure? Primary Student Begs Teacher for an 80 on Math Test

How harsh should parents be about their children’s grades? This question was brought up after a photo of a Liuzhou primary school student’s final math exam was posted online with a note begging, “Teacher give me an 80. If I get an 80 I will have a good New Year.”

The student was extremely nervous having to deal with his parents over New Years after receiving a poor grade in math. After the photo went viral, a psychology teacher commented parents should not be so hard on their children, and be rational when it comes to their grades.

The note was written by a fifth grader at the top of their math exam. The photo of the graded exam shows that the student actually did receive an 80. Some online claimed that the grade had only been given because of the student’s note. However, the teacher then posted a complete photo of the test and wrote “This proves that the student really did receive an 80. I did not just give him an 80 so that he would have a good New Year.”

The teacher’s name is Ms. Jiang. She said that the student in question usually averages about a 70 on math tests. The score of 80 was unexpected, especially after the student’s pleading, nervous note written on top of the test.

I remember the begging and haggling for extra marks from when I taught in China... very tedious indeed! (And this was from 16-18 year olds, not primary students!)

This sort of behaviour should be discouraged. I am a History teacher at a University and if a student begs me for anything then their grade is getting lowered. We aren't here to just teach them about the subject.

Happened to me a couple of rimes back when I was teaching, students got 90-95 and were begging me to give them 100. Said otherwise their parents will be really mad at them.
