Police in the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa have arrested a 39-year-old man after the bodies of two Chinese sisters were found stuffed into suitcases and abandoned on the side of a road.

Tatsuya Iwasaki is being held on charges of illegally disposing of bodies while officers work to build a murder case against him.

The two sisters, Chen Baolan, 25, and Chen Baizhen, 22, were both from Fuzhou, the capital of China’s southeastern Fujian province.

According to the Tokyo Reporter website, Chen Baolan arrived in Japan in 2009 on a student exchange programme, while her younger sister came in 2012 to study software programming.

However, both were also working in a club in Yokohama city’s Isezakicho red light district, according to the Shukan Jitsuwa tabloid magazine.

Police have obtained CCTV footage of a man they believe to be Iwasaki entering the flat the two sisters shared on July 6. He left nine hours later, but returned several times the next day and was seen leaving the apartment carrying suitcases.

Police recovered two suitcases containing the women’s remains after accessing the GPS system in Iwasaki’s car.

Autopsies have revealed that both sisters died of strangulation.

Iwasaki has reportedly refused to cooperate with police.
