Female Guangzhou Official Sacked for Not Returning from Belgium
Sep 12, 2013 By eChinacities.com

In what must really be an embarrassment to the Chinese world of officialdom, an official in Guangzhou decided not to return to her post in China and to enjoy married life in Belgium instead.

Wang Weihua, 45, was the deputy chief of the Foreign Investment and Agricultural Resources Audit Office – a position she had held for 25 years. On February 18 this year, Wang received permission to visit Belgium for six months. The purpose of her trip was to visit relatives, travel and get married. On August 1, when her holidays came to an end, she handed in her resignation from Belgium. However, since she did not follow the proper resignation protocol of handing in the resignation in person in Guangzhou, the audit bureau refused to grant her the resignation.

On August 21, when Wang had already overstayed her vacation by 15 consecutive days, the audit bureau notified Wang that she had been sacked from the post. Wang was most likely not too upset about it, though Chinese media have been downplaying (or blatantly not mentioning) that she actually tried to resign before she overstayed her permitted leave. In what was clearly a cat and mouse game, the audit bureau insisted on having the final say. There was no comment by Wang, who was presumably too busy cracking open the champagne bottles.
