Father Calms Upset Daughter on Bus, Becomes Star of Viral “Bus Molestation” Video

Many people in China have been displaying a penchant for doubling up as whistleblower when the opportunity arises. Equipped with a smart phone, one click enables the “exposer of scandals” to shame and name wrong-doers on the net. By and large, this has been a positive trend, leading to the downfall of corrupt officials and other shady characters. But as the story below cautions, things can quickly be misinterpreted and taken out of context, as one father recently found out.

A video purporting to show a man molest a young girl on a bus, recently went viral. However, unbeknownst to the person who filmed the scene, the two people in question were actually father and daughter, as the Zhuhai Municipal Public Security Bureau announced on the evening of December 7.  The police further stressed that there is no evidence of misconduct or illegal action in the video. In fact, the family of the man and girl in question had already cleared up the incident with the public security bureau.

According to police reports, a video of the “Zhuhai Bus Molestation Incident” had begun to circulate hours after the “incident” was filmed. The man in the video, Mr. Chen, had taken the initiative to contact the police and came into the station with his wife and daughter in order to clarify what had happened. He wanted Netizens and the Zhuhai Public Security Bureau to know the truth.

Mr. Chen is 31 years old and originally from Lufeng, Guangdong. At the time of the incident, he was doing business in Tangjia, Zhuhai. He said that on December 2, he took his daughter on the #10 bus to take a small trip. His young daughter started to throw a tantrum on the bus, and he was trying to coax her out of it and make her happy again. Later, he learned from a friend that someone had taken a video of him and his daughter and had put it online.

In the video, Mr. Chen is hugging the young girl who looks to be three years old. They are sitting on a seat behind the bus driver. He kisses her and continues to kiss her until they get off the bus. The video lasts for about three minutes. Netizens believed it to be a video of molestation and voiced great concern for the young child.

And there you have it: a classic example of misconstrued truth, created by taking something out of context and not checking the facts.

I'm not a father so ... but who the hell does that with their daughter? Lord, I must disagree. Videoing it was a good choice because what the father is doing is not illegal.
