Bodyguard Hailing App Muscles Into China

Soon everyone in China will be able to hire a bodyguard, just like they book a Didi, it has been reported.

The Jingiwei App, named after the secret police of the Qing Dynasty, is set to launch in the northeastern city of Qingdao next month, connecting 50,000 security guards from 27 companies with vulnerable users.

Anyone who feels unsafe, whether walking home late at night or carrying valuables, can use Jingiwei to see where potential bodyguards are in real time, just like they would on a ride sharing app, Qingdao News reports.

The service is available for companies and individuals, and will cost between RMB 70 and RMB 200 according to English language paper China Daily.

All of the bodyguards on the app are said to be former military personnel. They have apparently been required to hand over their ID cards and military discharge papers and take etiquette lessons before being cleared for duty.

The idea has however caused some alarm on Chinese social media, with some Sina Weibo users suggesting lonely single women may exploit the system.
