A 75 year old man who paid over 40,000 RMB out of his own pocket to fight corruption in his hometown has been compensated by local authorities. The Lingbi county government has reimbursed him 30,000 RMB so far and he has agreed to wait for the rest of the payment.

Tang Zun was so certain that there were dodgy dealings going on in his hometown in Anhui Province that he started collecting intelligence on his own and then paid for an audit of the village’s financial records out of his own pocket.

His work led to officials returning 110,000 RMB of ill-gotten money and the dismissal of eight local government leaders.

Xi Jinping’s campaign to crack down on corruption has been well publicized and many have been enthusiastic to take up the cause; cases like this of citizens taking the initiative in fighting corruption are lauded and well publicized, but whether any long term change will be effected, or not, only time can tell.
