Jun 19, 2009 Edited and translated by eChinacities.com staff Source: ifeng.comCanada wins again in the ranking of world’s most ideal cities for residence. The survey results, released on June 8th, found Canada clinching the number one spot for another year, while in Asia Taipei and Hong Kong ranked 39th and 62nd respectively. The top city in mainland China was found to be Tianjin.

According to Central News Agency (NCA), the ranking results were of a survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) of England. They researched 140 countries worldwide and ranked them according to 30 different indicators specified, with a main focus on: social stability/welfare, medical care/service, cultural, environmental, educational systems established, and other basic accommodating facilities in place.
Taipei's rank was the same as last year. Hong Kong advanced two places to become 39th this year. Tianjin remains the same, staying in 72nd place; Suzhou advanced one spot, making 74th, Beijing also ranked one place higher, moving up to 76th; Shenzhen, Shanghai and Dalian, ranked cumulatively 83rd, 84th, and 85th, remaining in the same spots as last year. Guangzhou climbed up one spot since last year, ranking 89th; while Qingdao climbed two places, making it 95th this year.
Of all the Chinese cities, Hong Kong emerged on top. Jon Copestake of EIU explains that this is in accordance with such factors as: convenience of transportation within the city, comprehensive educational system in place, low crime rates, overall social stability, and the numerous hosting of international cultural events, etc. Copestake also explains that the effects of the economic recession globally is taking a toll, but gradually, and did not in fact turn up to be too significant a factor in the rankings of this year. As far as the ranking of Taipei is concerned, Copestake remarked that it still needs to make some improvements to rank better: better participation in global sports events and improvement in living quality overall.
According to the EIU reports, the top 20 global cities ideal living are as follows: Vancouver, Canada; Vienna, Austria; Melbourne, Australia; Toronto, Canada; Perth, Australia and Calgary, Canada share 5th place; Helsinki, Finland; Geneva, Switzerland; Sydney, Australia and Zurich, Switzerland share 9th place.
Of all the American cities, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ranked the best coming in at 29th. America's most international metropolis, New York City, came in 56th, while British capital, London took 51st place.
