The Chinese capital, as with most of the world’s great capital cities, has a fine selection of upper crust restaurants where the finest cuisines from around the globe can be enjoyed in comfort and style.

The following is a short handpicked list that is designed to give eChinacities readers a taste of what’s available in Beijing, for when you’re in the mood for an extra special meal.

Huangpu Hui (黄浦会)View In Map

Beijing’s Huangpu Hui varies somewhat to the Shanghai eatery of the same name. Naturally, in the capital you’d want to choose a Chinese style courtyard house to hide away from the high-rise, and famous designers have added water features and other decoration to really give the place a natural Beijing flavor. Nice touches like Cixi era posts and street decorations really finish it off.

This is another take on the traditional Beijing courtyard restaurant and a different attempt at fusion cuisine. There isn’t a trace of the modern here, it is all elegant refinery. Whether it be the scrolls on the walls, or the pottery, it resembles a collectors gallery just as much as a restaurant. Here they serve the best in the main styles of Chinese cooking: Beijing (salty and strong), Shandong (slightly salty with an emphasis on seafood), Cantonese (sweet dimsum and glazed meats) and Shanghainese (plain, with an emphasis on fresh water fish).

So called ‘Family Feast’ is the traditional fare of Beijing wealthy families and as this restaurant is set in one of the former residences of Mei Lanfang (the world famous Peking Opera singer), the food served here claims to be the singer’s favorite dishes. The menu is selected and handwritten from scratch every day and all the food is prepared as it would have been in Mei Lanfang’s day. As the singer wanted to preserve his trim figure (he famously played the role of women), all the dishes are light. However, they have mde sure not to miss of Mei’s favorite Walnut Yoghurt.

Normally you wouldn’t think of light Japanese food and rich French cuisine mixing together, but this is just what’s happened here. This is no California style Japanese food, the stuff served up at Makoto has proved itself as a firm favorite with the regulars. Sushi and crisp tempura sit side by side with lamb ribs and they complement each other perfectly.

If the fact that this restaurant’s kitchen is run my Daniel, a 2 Michelin star chef isn’t enough to tempt you, the service and cuisine, indeed the whole experience from pre-dinner cocktails to after dinner coffee and cake is more than enough to convince you that this is not your usual Beijing eat.
