The latest Oscar winning hit, Slumdog Millionaire has caused somewhat of a taste for all things Indian in China over the last couple of months. So, for a little taste of India, right here in the capital, what better than to sample a meal at one of Beijing’s several curry houses.

This place is always a hit with the local Pakistani and Indian residence of Beijing, and all the chefs are from the sub-Continent. The staff here are very attentive and will never fail to ask whether or not you want you have any special requirements or allergies when taking your order. They will then make sure to ask you if you’ve had a good meal afterwards.

The curry here is just so, and neither is it expensive. Two people can eat their fill for under RMB 100, making this little place the best value Indian in Beijing.

If you’re in the Sanlitun area during the week for lunch, they do lunch sets for a very reasonable RMB 42 from 11am-2pm, which can be nicely rounded off with an ice cream desert.

Average cost: RMB 80

The name Taj sums up Indian and this place is decorated in classic Indian style. Everything about this place screams India, from the décor to the Indian chefs, it’s all very authentic.

Everything about the food is also so Indian. The way the curries are presented, they are alive with color and smell. There is nothing better than washing it all down with a special Indian milk tea, the special brew they serve up here is a house secret.

Average Cost: RMB 100

This place is hidden away in the hutongs around Gulou (the Drum Tower) and has therefore become something of a favorite among young couples. With beautiful Indian décor and soft lighting, this place is somewhere you can really go for a romantic evening out with that special someone.

If it’s your first time here I suggest you try the Papad appetizers, followed by some of their oven roasted Tandoor meats. For dessert don’t miss the Lassi yoghurt. All this is great washed down with some Masala chai (tea). Come the summer the place comes alive with live Indian performers and there is nothing better than spending a lazy summer’s afternoon here with a cool Qingdao.

Average Cost: RMB 95
