With new bar/restaurant combo venues opening up across the city at an overwhelming rate, how are you to know where’s hot and where not? Below, we’ve found two restaurant bars in Shenzhen that may just offer the best of both.

True Color Bar 本色酒吧
True Color is the place to go when you crave fine Western dining in a relaxing, musical environment. Though predominantly known for its music and nightlife scene, this establishment also serves up some delicious mouth-watering dishes at pretty decent prices. The bar is divided into two areas: one that plays ambient jazz music and another that hosts DJs, live performances and hopping parties. However, the dining area is located in the ambient jazz area, giving guests the option to move onto the more lively party room after the dinner if they so choose to. Furthermore, the restaurant’s staff are proficient in English so that ordering food is as smooth as its background music. True Color currently boasts not one but four venues across the city, but it is this one at Dongmen that is the largest and best restaurant/bar combo.

Now onto the food: True Color serves a tasty, tender Angus beef steak, and its signature cured meat plate is definitely a must-try for all non-vegetarians. It’s moist, fresh texture tastes strikingly similar to Spanish ham. Desserts are also delightful, especially the light and fluffy cheese cake (30 RMB). When the plates have been scraped clean and the stomach’s full, roll yourself acrosss the room and enjoy good jazz music over a glass of wine.

Galleon Restaurant and Bar 船吧
This popular bar and restaurant offers live entertainment, excellent drink deals and tasty food almost every night of the week. Though this venue is situated in a large Spanish-style boat, the only sea-sickness you’re going to experience here is a self-inflected over-indulgence of delicious, freshly brewed German beer. Though not as quiet and relaxing as True Color, Galleon is the perfect place to combine eating, drinking, partying and people watching. In terms of food, Galleon offers a good selection of Italian pastas, ham and salads that are especially satisfying when washed down with an ice-cold pint of golden beer. In terms of bar entertainment, Galleon maintains its status as party boat by regularly inviting famous DJs from around the world to spin the decks and set the mood. The venue’s perfect balance of food, drink and party ambience makes up for the fact that the chances of spotting a rugged pirate or handsome sailor are a million to one on this boat (except perhaps at Halloween).
