Mid-autumn Festival is coming, and with most people traveling a couple weeks later for the National Holiday, September 22nd to 24th is turning out to be a great time to hit the road. Check out some of the best travel deals from Shenzhen!

Manila, Philippines
One of the greatest benefits of living so far south in China is being so close to the rest of Southeast Asia. Flying from here (or Hong Kong) to Manila is actually a very doable weekend trip, and perfect for the three days of the Mid-autumn Festival. Even closer than many destinations in mainland China, Manila is only two hours away on a plane. From Manila there are a million things to do – beaches, historic tours, night clubs and more. Here’s the best part: At the time of writing, Cebu Pacific (www.cebupacificair.com) has round-trip flights starting at around 600 RMB! Surely that is one of the best deals in the whole world right now, and makes going to another country for only a few days worthwhile. Many foreign nationals do not need a tourist visa either, making this trip even more convenient.
 

Jiangxi Province
The fact that Jiangxi Province is not a popular tourist destination within China makes it a great choice for the Mid-autumn break – not too crowded and relatively affordable. eLong (http://www.elong.net/) has round trip tickets to Nanchang for 1,400 RMB, which is a great price during a mainland China holiday. From Nanchang, try Lushan for towering mountains and an ancient monastery, or head to Jingdezhen – the porcelain capital of China. Either way, there is way more than enough to do in this big province for just a two-day trip, so think about expending your stay a few days – the small crowds will get even smaller.

Macau
For a closer and quicker trip, how about a ferry ride to Macau? Ferry fees usually do not increase during holidays, and the one-hour ride from the Shekou Port to Macau is worth a gamble. The ferry ticket costs about 100 RMB, and you can make it a day trip, or stay the night if you win enough at the Wynn or Venetian. Finally, do not leave Macau without eating a meal at Fernando’s for the best Portuguese cuisine around and some fine adult beverages on tap.

Beijing
Surprisingly, there are some good deals on flights to Beijing during this holiday. Getting from Shenzhen to Beijing for 2,000 RMB is a decent deal even during the offseason. Just before October is a great time to head north weather-wise, and we all know what  Beijing has to offer --  a great local culture of old-school Beijingers, the best food in China and plenty of touristy things to keep you busy. Taipei, Taiwan
Flying from Shenzhen to Taipei during this holiday is not necessarily “cheap”, but the deals are still better than flying to Taipei from any other city in mainland China. Try Eva Air’s website (http://www.evaair.com/) for round-trip specials. If you can find a suitable deal, a couple days in and around Taipei are perfect for this length of holiday. Spend a day hiking around the mountains surrounding the city, and head back to town at night to gorge yourself on night market after night market. It’s also still baseball season in Taiwan, so if you’re lucky you can catch a Brothers game!

One of the most frustrating things about living in China can be national holidays. 1.2 billion people have the same days off as you, and ticket prices skyrocket while destinations fill up with busloads of local tourists.
