This British chain now has two branches in Shenzhen, making it easier than ever to personalise your apartment with all the accessories you miss from back home. For example, rather than use your balcony as a repository for your dirty washing, why not check out the range of BBQs for sale at B&Q and have your friends over for a party. Their website isn’t particularly user friendly, so it is worth just visiting their outlets in Luohu or Futian to see what other items they have for sale. They will also be more than happy to completely redesign and install a new kitchen for you, if that is what you want!

This place is huge, and in addition to its main business of stocking lots of different types of imported Western food, Metro also sells many household items that make life more tolerable in Shenzhen. From dishwashers to professional kitchen knives, you can find lots of day-to-day items here that might not necessarily come as standard in your rented apartment.

If you have a little extra cash to spare and want to splurge on some real luxury items, then Meten near B&Q in Luohu definitely won’t disappoint. This is the place to go if you want to set up your flat in a contemporary European style. It sells really expensive and beautiful furniture, including sumptuously carved king sized beds that make you feel like a medieval monarch. This is definitely a place for the well-heeled of Shenzhen, and is more likely to be popular with the growing class of bourgeois Chinese and visiting Hong Kongers rather than the expat community.

5) Old Peking  市老北京古典家具店

For a more authentic Chinese feel in your apartment, why not check out some of the items for sale in Old Peking. As the name suggests, this little shop sells replica Qing dynasty furniture, and it does a roaring trade. Although many of the items here are incredibly expensive—a wardrobe or chest of drawers could set you back around 30,000 RMB—there is no doubt that Old Peking has everything you need to give your apartment an imperial atmosphere. It’s a great place to wander around (it looks much like an art gallery), and you will see some truly stunning Chinese furniture.

In short, it is boutique furniture that has been sourced in Europe, and it’s definitely going to be a hit with socially mobile and style-conscious young people.
