Finding Shenzhen's Best Burger

Finding Shenzhen's Best Burger
By Ellen Schliebitz , eChinacities.com

Though the true origins of the hamburger are somewhat ambiguous, one fact is very clear: burgers have taken the world by storm since they made their first appearance sometime in the 19th century, China being no exception. Though burgers can be found in virtually all corners of the planet, their reputation has been flawed thanks to the immense popularity of global fast food chains that mass produce the meat and destroy the planet in the process. Not all burgers cater to the vast masses however and chains like McDonald’s can be easily avoided, especially in major cities like Shenzhen. In a city, country or even a world obsessed with devouring burgers as fast as they are produced, it’s a refreshing change to find restaurants that respect the burger as they would a prime filet steak. Below is a guide to where you can find top quality burgers in Shenzhen without the guilt.

Cowboys Hamburger

Cowboy’s is probably the best choice for good quality burgers at decent prices. Cowboy’s customer base extends beyond those wishing to grab a quick bite to those missing the flavour of authentic American food and with the quality to match. Unlike the mass purveyors of fast food, Cowboy’s grills its meat instead of frying it, which means that not only are they tastier but significantly healthier too. Basic quarter pounder burgers cost around 20 rmb, a real bargain for the fact that you get a nice smokey chunk of meat as opposed to grease. The restaurant also provides free wireless internet and has a decent choice of American classics such as Buffalo Wings and French Fries. Coffee, tea, beer and soda are also available.

McCawley’s Irish Bar and Restaurant
McCawley’s menu features a fine selection of delicious Western classics such as soups and salads, hearty sandwiches, chunky fries, potatoe skins, chicken wings, steak, Irish stew, fish and chips and of course the famous McCawley burger. Though the menu is not the most extensive in the world, the quality of the food makes up for it; after all quality is better than quantity. The restaurant dishes up a mouth-watering burger that’s ground by McCawley’s own butchers and consists of a 300g grilled patty of beef, served on a toasted sesame bun, with onion, lettuce and tomatoe. Though not exactly cheap at 70 RMB per burger, you do pay for what you get. For an additional 5 RMB you can add extra toppings such as cheese, bacon, fried egg and mushrooms. Hungry yet?

The Terrace

The Terrace dishes up an eclectic mix of Western and Thai dishes, with choices ranging from Western snacks such as onion rings, French fries and Buffalo Wings, soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, burgers and pasta to a whole range of grilled Thai specialties and more. Contrary to McCawley’s who only have one burger on offer, the Terrace offers three different variants: the Terrace cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburger and chili cheeseburger. The restaurant uses good quality ingredients and offers an English menu. The Terrace is also known for its live music and was voted “best live music venue” by That’s PRD magazine, so this venue is the perfect spot to combine tasty western grub with live entertainment.
