Al Fresco Drinking - Popular Outdoor Bars in Shenzhen

Al Fresco Drinking - Popular Outdoor Bars in Shenzhen
By Jeff Swiryn , eChinacities.com

If you’re headed to Shenzhen any time from May through October, the hot and humid weather is surely going to make you thirsty. Luckily for us, Shenzhen offers several fun and unique outdoor establishments for enjoying adult beverages. And if you’re coming during the so-called “winter”, it never really gets cold enough to prevent you from enjoying these South China gems. Here are some of the most highly recommended outdoor bars in Shenzhen:

Club VivaView In Map
One of the most popular clubs in Shenzhen’s young Central Business District, Club Viva exploded onto the scene a couple of years ago and is still a hotspot every Friday and Saturday night. It’s not surprising that this place is so likeable, because it has everything a standard indoor club has (dance floor, music, good selection of liquor), but also features a large outdoor patio-style seating area. The billiards table is also outdoors, which is a fun twist.

The patio section of Viva is definitely its biggest draw. Comfortable rattan-style tables and big chairs are scattered throughout, and if you feel like busting a move you can always head inside for a quick jam on the dance floor – the DJs are usually very good.

Make sure to call ahead to reserve an outdoor table if it’s a Friday or Saturday, and ask about the “10 for 100” special (10 shots for 100RMB).

Getting there: Metro Line 1 to Gouwu Gongyuan, Exit C and cross Fuhua Lu

The TerraceView In Map
As the name suggests, The Terrace is a second-storey club at Seaworld in Shenzhen’s Shekou district. With about half of The Terrace on an actual outdoor terrace, this place is a very popular live music joint among the Shekou crowd.

Sitting out on The Terrace’s terrace offers a nice view of Seaworld, a giant ship-converted-hotel, and the hustle-and-bustle of the nightlife below. The biggest draw The Terrace offers is probably its house band. A mostly Filipino ensemble, this group plays all the rockin’ classics from the last couple decades, and they are really well-received out here.

There are several other bar options in the area, but only The Terrace has a big outdoor area, where you can still hear the live music and order drinks without being pushed around on a dance floor. It’s also a decent Thai restaurant during the day.

Add: Seaworld Square, Taizi Lu, Shekou (above Starbucks), Shenzhen

Getting there: Not the easiest place to get to, so a cab is probably your best bet

Coco Park Bar Street View In Map
This is not just one outdoor bar; this is a whole street full of them. Just tell a taxi driver you want to go to “Coco”, or hop on the metro and get off at Gouwu Gongyuan. The entire east side of Coco Park is an outdoor bar street, and on a good night there will be such a good crowd that you can’t tell where one bar ends and the next begins.

Most of these bars offer decent Happy Hours, and start to get pretty lively after dinner time. Three of the most popular are Demon Bar, Loxon Bar, and Norway Place Oslo.

McCawley's Irish bar and Restaurant FutianView In Map
One more option right smack dab in the middle of the CBD. There is a McCawley’s in Sea World near The Terrace, but the Futian version is bigger and more fun. It’s actually on the opposite side of Club Viva, and across the street is Coco Park.

So, here’s a novel idea: Start at McCawley’s with some authentic Irish-style pub food and a good imported beer on tap, and make your way to Viva or any of the bars at Coco Park’s bar street!

If you’d rather stay the whole evening at McCawley’s, you won’t be disappointed. Also with several outdoor picnic-style tables, this is a great place for people watching and a good Western meal if you’re craving one. The (good) beer selection is much bigger than most, and sports on satellite TV is never a bad thing.

CITIC PlazaView In Map
CITIC is similar to Coco Park in that it’s not one bar, but an area where several great bars with outdoor facilities are located together. Imagine a circular mall with the innermost circle open to the air – that’s where these bars are.

It’s also conveniently located on Shenzhen’s main metro line (Kexueguan station). It’s usually a bit more low key than the previously mentioned places, so this is a good option as well.

One of the favorites here is 3D. This bar offers tons of imported beer choices and also has sports on TV.

Add: Citic City Plaza Bar Strip, 1093 Shennan Zhong Lu, Futian District, Shenzhen
地址: 深圳市福田区深南中路1093号,中信广场
Getting there: Metro Line 1 to Kexueguan station, and follow signs for CITC

From way out west (The Terrace) towards the old downtown (CITIC), Shenzhen offers more outdoor bars than you could see in a week. Whether you prefer to relax, eat Western food, dance, or listen to music, your preferences are covered with this list. So what are you waiting for? Shenzhen’s outdoor scene wants you!
