A Taste of Home: Finding Foreign Food in Shenyang

A Taste of Home: Finding Foreign Food in Shenyang
By Victoria Edwards , eChinacities.com

Although Chinese food is delicious, there are some days you can’t help but crave the comfort foods from home. Having a bite of a turkey sandwich, good pizza, pasta or a sip of good beer, can transport one right back home, if only for a second.

Luckily for us, Shenyang is getting more and more foreign grocery stores. Metro, Olé and Isetan, are three foreign grocery stores, near the city center, that carry a general array of foreign imports such as cereal, coffee, butter, cheese, imported beer, wine and liquor. So get out there and get a taste of home.

1) MetroView In Map
This monster of a store is housed inside of a huge dimly lit warehouse, similar to a Costco or Sam’s Club in the United States. Metro has a good general supply of foreign cuisine must-have’s including, but not limited to, the following: a vast supply of imported wines, mostly from France and Italy, imported liquors such as rum, vodka and champagne as well as imported beers, a decent cold cereal supply that consists mostly of Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes, Philadelphia cream cheese, sliced cheddar cheese, pasta and pasta sauces and imported chocolate from Europe. This is a great place to buy in bulk.

One important thing about Metro is you need a membership to shop there; this can be obtained by bringing a passport, introductory letter from your employer and proof of your employment, like a contract or business card.

2) OléView In Map
Olé is the newest foreign cuisine grocery store to open in Shenyang. It is located in the basement of a newly opened high-end mall called Mixc. Olé fits in well with the gloss of the mall; and it has the ambiance of a high class boutique. The store is light and airy with trendy light features and smooth jazz piano background music. Olé carries the same basic products as Metro, such as butter, cheese, cold cereal, pasta and wine; however, the products are not packaged in the same bulk quantity.

Olé stands out because of its bakery: They carry freshly baked crispy baguettes, tossed in paper bags, sour dough loaves and Italian loaves, at 9.80 RMB each. In addition, Olé has a more extensive imported dessert selection, carrying a wider array of Belgian chocolates as well as Trader Joe’s frozen chocolates dipped in strawberries for 181 RMB.

3) Isotan View In Map
Isotan is also located in the basement of the department store building. It is not a warehouse, but it doesn’t have the same high-end feel as Olé. They carry a similar selection of foreign goods, but they stand out in a few areas. First, they have an extensive supply of specialty cheeses, including the following: Danish blue cheese, fruit and nuts, sundried tomatoes, cheese and basil (34 RMB).

They also have a great supply of curries. They have devoted an entire aisle to different flavours of Golden Curry (17.20 RMB). Lastly, this was the only store that carried four packs of refrigerated Starbucks coffee (21 RMB). With foreign cheese, a great curry supply and Starbucks coffee, this is a great store for something different.
