Western Breakfasts in Shanghai

Western Breakfasts in Shanghai
By Andrea Scarlatelli , eChinacities.com

When living in Shanghai, there are plenty of opportunities to try the local breakfast cuisine. But while that cabbage-filled pastry or steaming hot meat bun can be great when you’re on the go, sometimes you just want to hark back to the days of good ol’ eggs and bacon with a side of toast. With that in mind, here are some of the best places to go to fill that Western breakfast hankering that we all have from time to time.

KABB serves up casual American fare in the ritzy (and touristy) Xintiandi. You’ll come across tourists and locals alike here, all enjoying KABB’s fanciful twists on some old favourites. From classic Eggs Benedict to pancakes to banana walnut French toast, this place does it like Mum used to – only fancier. Don’t miss (and it’s very hard not to) their do-it-yourself Bloody Mary Kit, which guarantees that your morning dose of alcohol will be exactly to your liking. Everything is à la carte, but each meal comes with coffee, tea, or a soft drink. Be sure to make reservations as this place always fill up, especially at weekends.

For the French lovers out there, La Crêperie serves up both savoury and sweet crêpes. They offer two set menus, both of which start off with a buckwheat galette (usually some combination of cheese, egg, mushroom, and various types of meat). The more expensive set menu includes pretty much every filling you can imagine in that buckwheat galette, and is perfect for those with a more hearty appetite. You’ll then move on to the sweet crêpe course, including caramel and chocolate. Both of the set menus also include your choice of orange juice, coffee, or soda.

Another French destination, Latitude, serves its phenomenal egg dishes any which way you like - Eggs Florentine, Eggs Royal, and Eggs Benedict are only just the beginning. Each item comes with hash browns, chicken sausage, and a salad. Early afternoon drinkers will enjoy their free-flow Tiger beer for an additional 50 RMB. This deliciousness can’t last forever, though – this deal is only available on Sundays starting at noon.

Mesa & Manifesto, one of the most popular French Concession joints, features an à la carte brunch that serves your favourites with contemporary twists. Want a stack of pancakes? Be prepared to be served some homemade banana jam with them. Poached eggs more your style? Prepare your taste buds for the pumpkin Hollandaise sauce drizzled over it. Meals don’t include drinks, but they have an array of juices, coffees, and smoothies to round out the most important meal of the day. Mesa & Manifesto also make their breakfasts family and kid-friendly by providing an ayi to watch over the little ones.

The newcomer Mr. Willis aims to provide simple and basic breakfast dishes that are just like you had growing up – only better. Admittedly a place for eggs (the eggs benedict is served as a type of burger, while the omelettes come in their own pans), you can also branch out to more lunch like options if you like.
