New in Shanghai: Recently Opened Bars and Restaurants

Looking for something new to do in Shanghai now that summer’s been and gone? Check out what’s new, and what you might have missed in the last few weeks, with our round-up of newly opened restaurants and bars.

Drinking

Dada View In Map
Michael Ohlsson has been a fixture on the Shanghai nightlife scene for more than five years. As DJ Ozone he played music he loved at venues around town, with the Antidote parties he brought musicians he loved into town, creating one of the most consistently entertaining club nights in the process. Now he’s bringing cheap drinks, movie nights and guest DJs to the masses at his new bar, Dada. On the Xingfu strip, tucked away between LoGO and Anar, Dada is low-key and highly recommended. Check out our review of Shanghai’s dodgiest dive bars for more.

Bar IkiView In Map
Although it lacks something of the magic of Mokkos (1245 Wuding Xi Lu, near Wanhangdu Lu) Shanghai’s latest Japanese bar, Iki, is still a real treat. What it lacks in authentic atmosphere it makes up for with its extensive shochu (and shochu-based cocktail) selection. And there’s even an English menu to help anyone mystified by the array of strangely-decorated bottles on the wall.

Kaiba Belgian Beer Garden 开吧View In Map
The “garden” is more of a courtyard – part of yet another of the city’s “creative zones” - but this is still one of the nicest new places to go drinking. The beer selection (more than fifty varieties, with a charming checklist for you to complete as you work your way through them) is as impressive as at the original location (528 Kangding Lu, near Xikang Lu), only this time there’s more space to stretch out and enjoy yourself.

Dining

Gourmet CaféView In Map
Fans of the first Gourmet Café (455 Shanxi Bei Lu, near Beijing Xi Lu ) are unlikely to be disappointed with this new offering, the location of which – in the swanky Shanghai center – speaks volumes about their success to date: amazing what a bit of prime meat will do for you. One of the best mid-range meal options in town, Gourmet Café specialize in burgers – dozens of combinations, paired with imported goodies like fresh mozzarella and avocado – and milkshakes. This time they’ve introduced a (slightly more expensive) evening menu alongside the billion burgers, there’s a particularly nice terrace facing on to Nanjing Road, and happy hour runs from 6-8pm on weekdays.

Lost Heaven 花马天堂云南餐厅View In Map
An awesomely ambitious new venue from your favorite purveyor of classy Burmese-influenced dining, Lost Heaven’s near-Bundside location is guaranteed to pull in the crowds. Quite what they’ll be going there for hasn’t yet been decided – it’s part bar, part restaurant, part nightclub, part ethnic-themed home deco store. But if the food at their opening party is anything to go buy, the important things haven’t changed: top notch food by way of Burma, Thailand and Yunnan served in incomparably plush surroundings. Their original location (38 Gaoyou Lu, near Fuxing Xi Lu) probably remains the best date venue in town, but if you just want to wow your dining partner, bring them here.

The Puli Hotel 璞丽酒店View In Map
Two for one here, with a stunning new restaurant (Jing’an) on the second floor and the wonderfully atmospheric Long Bar at ground level. The Puli is the latest boutique hotel in town, and the attention to detail shows. The 32 meter bar doubles as the check-in desk, the wine and whiskey list are similarly long, and the open fireplace will make it the hottest place in town come winter. Upstairs is upscale modern-European food, with a few Asian twists, in a beautifully minimalistic space. It’s not cheap, but it’s more than worth it.
