New Restaurants in Shanghai This Spring

New Restaurants in Shanghai This Spring
By Susie Gordon , eChinacities.com

A new season means new openings around town, and this Spring, there’s a great new selection of restaurants to choose from. From Mexican spice through New York-style Italian, there’s plenty to tempt your palate. Here are some of the best new eateries in town:

1) Chalet SuisseView In Map
There are already a couple of fondue places dotted around Shanghai, but we can’t believe it’s taken this long for raclette to arrive. Newly opened Chalet Suisse comes up trumps, offering raclette (a slab of cheese melted under a heat lamp then eaten with pickles and potatoes) along with Swiss meats, sausages, salads, and fondue. The décor is kitschly authentic – wood panelled walls, photos and paintings of Switzerland, and the Swiss manager and his Chinese wife will make sure you feel welcome. Next door there’s a bakery and imported goods shop, so you can stock up on home comforts after your meal!

2) Mi TierraView In Map
Mexican food delivery company Mi Tierra has branched out and opened a restaurant, where it will serve up the same authentic regional food that it has become known for. The firm occupies four stories on Yongjia Lu, with the bar and taqueria on the ground floor, restaurant on the second, and delivery company on the third and fourth. While the food is little on the expensive side, Mi Tierra is a nice addition to Shanghai’s selection of Mexican restaurants; time will tell if it will enjoy the success and popularity of more established venues like Cantina Agave, Maya, and Adobo Latin Flavor.

3) ProntoView In Map
Number 1 Xiangyang Bei Lu at the crossroads with Julu Lu is fast becoming a dining hub. On the first floor, a New York-style Italian restaurant has just opened, which is an interesting concept. With so many Italians in New York, the city has developed a special sort of Italian cuisine, including deep pan pizza, veal piccata and parmesan chicken. Pronto’s managers were wise to add this Big Apple twist to their menu, since Shanghai is already chock-full with Italian joints – the New York influence makes Pronto stand out, and will hopefully ensure that it flourishes.

4) DeraView In Map
One floor up from Pronto in the same building, you’ll find Dera, the latest Indian restaurant to open in Shanghai. If you’re after a cheap and cheerful Indian meal, this probably isn’t the right place, but for foodies looking for authentic, high-quality North Indian fare, Dera fits the bill. Expect to pay at least a couple of RMB per person, but it’s definitely worth it for such upscale food. Fans of shisha can book the private hookah room.

5) Pasta InnView In Map
What sets Pasta Inn apart from all the other Italian cafés in Shanghai is the fantastic afternoon tea special. For 19 RMB you get a coffee and dessert, perfect for a post-lunch, pre-dinner pick-me-up. However, if it’s a meal you want, there’s a selection of solid Italian classics that won’t disappoint. It’s definitely value for money: pizzas are around 40 RMB each, while pasta dishes are around 30 RMB. There’s also risotto, meat and seafood mains if that’s more your thing.

The interior is fresh and white, with a big window running down one side. Zest partners with Shanghai Organics, so all of their food is guaranteed to be healthy and pesticide free.
