New Imago Plaza: A Welcome Addition to Putou District

New Imago Plaza: A Welcome Addition to Putou District

Shanghai’s northerly Putuo District hasn’t traditionally been the go-to spot for shopping. A little rough around the edges, it’s better known for tasty street food, budget hostels and hotels, and endless grey apartment blocks. However, with the recent opening of the Imago Plaza retail and entertainment complex on Wuning Lu, Putuo has a brand new attraction that places the district firmly in the ‘up and coming’ category.

Situated just over the faux neo-classical oddity that is Wuning Bridge, Imago Plaza is within walking distance of the Wuning Carrefour and Amanda Plaza on Changshou Road, and about twenty minutes from Zhongshan Park on foot. The nearest Metro station is Caoyang Lu on Lines 3 and 4.

Popular brands like Zara, Costa, and Ajisen Ramen are Imago’s biggest draw, so it’s no surprise that they occupy street-level space on the ground floor. Costa’s outdoor terrace is right beside the main entrance, while Ajisen, Croissants de France, Bershka, and Zara flank the sidewalk behind narrow lawns.

Inside, Imago is manageably compact, unlike some of the sprawling malls on Nanjing Xi Lu and Huaihai Lu. There are five floors, each with a different theme, and a basement which is home to Lianhua Fine Food (an upscale version of the street-corner grocery store), Mannings, and various mall favorites like Beard Papa, sushi takeout, and a small baked goods stall.

The first floor is titled ‘The Brands’, and has Zara, Bershka, Pull and Bear, and OSIM. Fans of the French brand Morgan will be pleased to know that a branch is due to open here within the next couple of months. The second floor is called ‘High Street’ and features Chinese labels like Ochirly, Josiny, St. Chic, and Walker Shop. The third floor goes by ‘Running in Fashion’, which implies sportswear, but is actually an extension of the ‘High Street’ section. Floor four is ‘Fun and Co.’ and houses a multi-screen cinema, beauty salon, and a children’s arcade. When you’re all shopped out and need some sustenance, head up to the fifth floor a.k.a. ‘The Kitchen Table’. Here you’ll find mall staples like Pankoo (is there a single mall in Shanghai that doesn’t have a branch?) along with a seafood buffet and a steak house.

Imago Plaza is a great addition to the Jing’an end of Putuo, and will help the area push forward as the latest “it district”. With mid-range brands, popular names, and some great F&B units, what’s not to love?
