Fall Flavour: Five New Restaurants in Shanghai

Fall Flavour: Five New Restaurants in Shanghai

Perhaps the extended run of good weather Shanghai has enjoyed recently has tempted people away from their blueprints and out into the sun, but there’s not been too many bar openings of late. So instead we’re looking at five restaurants and cafes that recently opened their doors. All of them are well worth a visit.

1) Restaurant Martin 马丁餐厅View In Map
One of the biggest names in fine dining, Spain’s three-starred Michelin chef, Martin Berasategui, has opened his first overseas restaurant, in a gorgeously renovated private villa, inside Xujiahui Park. It’s not cheap (tasting menus are 600-800 RMB), but the modern Spanish fare is truly extraordinary, and well worth the price.

2) Mr WillisView In Map
Former Waga’s head chef Craig Willis takes up the reins at his eponymous new restaurant, right above La Strada (also a Willis venture). It’s a homely place, serving superb homestyle bistro food, with a touch of class that elevates it above many other restaurants in the same price bracket.

3) BalthazarView In Map
Another venture from restaurateur Eduardo Vargas (he of iiit! Bistro Burger, Closed Door, Osteria, Azul, and of course Vargas Grill), Balthazar is a French brasserie inside a 1920s Taikang Lu villa. There’s a great open fireplace and bar, and, best of all, a whole room given over to imported cheese, a Cheese Cave no less.

4) Super DinerView In Map
This place does what it says on the tin: it’s a glorious homage to all things Americana – right down to the chequered tabletops – and though prices are steep, it’s a fun place to come with friends. Everyone can afford a coke float, right?

5) Mogoo Café 磨咕咖啡馆View In Map
A new outlet for popular café chain Boona, that’s already popular with the laptop and lunch crowd. Great lunch specials – 35 RMB for a big sandwich and a soft drink – and hip-industrial décor, are likely to see it staying in vogue for a long time yet.
