Green Living: Guangzhou’s Yunxi Eco-Park

Yunxi Ecology Park (云溪生态公园) is located west of Baiyun Mountain and is currently the biggest free park in Guangzhou. Built in September 2001, the park was constructed for use during the 9th National Games of China, and faces the Guangzhou Gymnasium, one of the venues used during the games. The large park is divided into different areas and also features a handy passage for hikers heading up to Baiyun Mountain.

Water Garden Area

Located in the heart of the park, this area offers the most attractive scenery amid a truly flowery setting, with the main gate directly opposite the Guangzhou Gymnasium. The water garden is built around a natural formation of surrounding valleys and pools, featuring streams full of fish and frogs, completing its idyllic natural setting. Feel free to bring along some bread to feed the various birds that flock around the area, or try your hand at feeling the many goldfish occupying the streams. If you’re a bit of a culture vulture, spend 5 RMB and you can have your picture taken wearing traditional Chinese clothes at a nearby photography booth. The southern part of the water garden area is purely flora, which is littered with banyan and coconut trees. Visitors can also enjoy a relaxing cup of tea or some food at the nearby restaurant, though if you’re eating inside there’s a 300 RMB minimum purchase policy, so it’s better to sit outside and sip a nice cup of tea whilst enjoying the view.

Water Lily Area

You guessed it. This area features a pool where revellers can enjoy the sights of countless water lilies and other water-based plants which is definitely worth visiting, especially in the summer. Even in winter, this area maintains its popularity as it’s quiet and serves as a great getaway from the frantic city life. While standing in a nearby pavilion, visitors can also soak in the peaceful mountain atmosphere surrounding them, making it a green paradise for all to enjoy.

Here you can either sample the many fruits on offer, or simply enjoy the surrounding nature. On a hill situated next to the area is a garden featuring a meditation area for visitors who wish to truly escape. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Guangzhou’s Baiyun Airport. Keep in mind though, when you’re walking around the fruit area you may encounter wild mushrooms, some of which may well be poisonous. If you’re feeling peckish, don’t let your curiosity ruin your day with an upset stomach!
