A drink or two at happy hour is perfect for after-work bonding, but too many after may lead to disaster (all a matter of perspective, of course). While a good start on happy hour one day may leave you not so happy the next, drinking in Guangzhou is worth the risk! Part of a series, this second article explores the best happy hour deals in the Tianhe District, which has rapidly developed since the 1980s to become Guangzhou’s leading centre of business. We will also consider food menus to steady the buzz from alcohol and give you something more than beer for dinner. Best of all, most deals mentioned are available every day of the week.

1) Hooley’s Irish Pub and Restaurant
True to its Irish meaning of ‘party’, Hooley’s is a great place to indulge in good music, a wide selection of Western meals, decent drinks and great company. Considered by many their home away from home, Hooley’s earns this reputation by bringing the warm Irish hospitality all the way to Guangzhou. A wide selection of draft beers are on offer during happy hour everyday from 17:00 – 20:00 except for Mondays which has it extended from 17:00 – 22:00. For the budget conscience, you can get a Tiger or Carlsberg (15 RMB a half pint, 20 RMB a pint) or the Hooley’s original ‘metre of beer’ which offers five pints of Tiger or Carlsberg in a unique metre long carrying paddle (90 RMB). Kilkenny and Guinness (28 RMB a half pint, 48 RMB a pint) and Strongbow (25 RMB a half pint, 50 a pint) are also some of the beers on offer. With a social atmosphere, Hooley’s is a great place to hang out with mates or make new ones.

2) The Tavern Sports Bar
Constantly showing live sports on their widescreen televisions, with board games and pool tables, The Tavern has a lively atmosphere with spacious indoor and outdoor seating areas. Popular amongst locals and expats, it also offers a delicious range of food to accompany your drink (or is it the other way around?), however, just be sure to clarify with the staff what your order is, as they are known to get it wrong sometimes. Happy Hour specials at The Tavern are everyday from 16:00 – 20:00 and all day Monday (to fight your bouts of Monday-itis) with a wide range of draft beers (ranging from 20 RMB to 45 RMB), bottle beers (20 RMB – 25 RMB) and more than 20 cocktails on offer (25 RMB for non alcoholic, 35 RMB – 50 RMB for alcoholic) to soothe your taste buds. What makes The Tavern stand out is that it has Tetley’s Bitter (not to be confused with the tea) on tap for 30 RMB during happy hour. 3) 13 Factories 十三行
More of a restaurant than a pub, 13 Factories is well known for its American-style food, selection of bottled American microbrews and chilled out atmosphere. It offers long drinks (15 RMB) and red wine (20 RMB) for happy hour everyday from 17:00 – 20:00, which is nice to have with (and while waiting for) your dinner. The American microbrews, such as the Brooklyn Lager, are priced at 35 RMB, which is considered a happy hour price all the time! A pleasant place to eat and drink, 13 Factories has a conducive atmosphere to catch up with friends.

4) Feel Bar
Conveniently located right by Vanguard on the corner of Tianhe Beilu and Longkou Donglu, Feel Bar is an intimate bar which offers its customers original imported beers from around the world. Looking through their menus, you can find a variety of beers from Germany, Belgium, Italy, England and Australia ranging from 40 RMB to 80 RMB a bottle. Happy hour is from 10:00 – 20:00 everyday, offering three imported bottled beers for the cost of two. Marketed to be an elegant place, Feel Bar has a prosaic atmosphere with sedative music; however it is still a tolerable place to be if you are desperate for a familiar beer from home.

5) LV Wine and Cigar BarView In Map
A small and intimate bar with a cigar theme, LV has a laid back ambience with very friendly staff. All bottled beers and cocktails are ‘buy one, get one free’ at happy hour, between 17:00 and 20:00 everyday. Great value, you can get (two) bottles of Tsingtao (22 RMB) or Corona (30 RMB) or try out their fantastic range of delicious cocktails from 45 RMB. What’s also notable about LV is that this ‘two for one’ special does not mean that you need to order two of the same kind drink in order to benefit, which makes it a good place to warm up and experiment with drinks.

6) Q Bar @ The Westin
Bringing some style and class to Guangzhou, Q Bar inside the Westin Hotel runs happy hour specials to coincide with its popular Salsa night. Offering ‘buy one, get one free’ on all cocktails (from 80 RMB) and soft drinks (40 RMB) every Thursday and Saturday night from 21:00 – 02:00, Q Bar has an energetic atmosphere with great music from the live band and lots of beautiful people dancing. However, be warned of their extra 15% service charge on every order.
