It wasn’t until 2009, my second stint in China, that I discovered the awesome thing known as all-you-can-eat buffets in Chengdu, Sichuan. What I stumbled upon was a Thai Barbeque in my home city of Chengdu that offered an all-you-can-eat and drink deal for 35 RMB. That’s right, folks! 35 RMB to eat freely and drink as much 528 beer as you pleased. This got me motivated to search for other all-you-can-eat Chengdu buffet restaurants and needless to say I found quite a few. The best thing I found about these Chengdu restaurants that offered such deals was the variety of food you could get, especially in terms of non-Chinese Asian cuisine restaurants in Chengdu. So anyway, here it is: the best all-you-can-eat deals in Chengdu.

1) Thai Grill Room泰国烤肉管 View In Map
While the authenticity of this “Thai” barbeque is highly questionable, this is the number one all-you-can-eat option in Chengdu. Why? Because it is a 35 RMB deal that includes juice and beers for free. You can’t beat that! There probably aren’t too many other establishments in China where you can eat as much as you want and drink as much as you want for 35 RMB. You only get one choice of beer, and sometimes the beer type changes. As of two months ago, the beer was the local Blue Sword beer, a very, very mediocre beer; but how are you going to complain at these prices? 

So what are the dishes worth eating here? Well, the place is always stocked with meat and offers a salad and fruit bar. The black pepper beef is tenderly tasty and the red peppers, eggplant and onions are all quite delicious. A variety of chicken and pork is in the house as well; the Wu Hua Rou (五花肉) is certainly worth a try.

This place has several locations throughout the Chengdu metropolis, but the one at New City Plaza on the west side of Chengdu is the best.

2) Korean-Chinese Jing Ying Barbeque 中韩精英烧烤View In Map
Located right next to the Chengdu’s Jiu Yan Qiao club area, this Korean-Chinese fusion barbeque stands out among the others because of its unbeatable all-you-can-eat price and relaxed out-door patio style atmosphere. Groups are charged by the seat (only 29 RMB) here and you are free to eat as much as you want. 

The fei niu beef is the best dish here, but is not the best thing about this place. So what is, then, the best thing about this Korean barbeque? Not only is there a plethora of beef and vegetables available, but there is fruit and ice cream available along with the all-you-can-eat deal. Just imagine this. You eat a boatload of Korean beef and then suck down some sweet watermelon and vanilla ice-cream at no extra charge! The current price of watermelons in China is quite alarming, and being able to grub on some free watermelon here is a great way to get your watermelon fill. Anyway, beers are only eight Yuan for a bottle of Snow. If you go for dinner, it is advised to get there early as seats are limited.

3) Hokkaido 北海道日本料理 View In Map
While most Japanese food in Chengdu is overpriced and simply not that authentic, Hokkaido serves up decent Japanese food and offers a drink buffet as well as an all-you-can-eat deal. The sushi here is actually good, especially if you compare it to 7-11’s sushi. This place has multiple locations throughout Chengdu, including one near Café Paname and one near Chunxi Lu. Take note: sake bombs are allowed, but will aggravate the staff there. My suggestion is to do multiple sake bombs to start your meal; make it clear your crowd is going to get rowdy.

4) Romantic Western-Style Food 罗曼地西餐 View In Map
This place is not that romantic, nor is it that authentic; however, this place is a solid deal at its price. You can eat Chinese-style steak and pizza, munch on Italian pasta and sip on sodas freely for the price of 48 RMB during lunch and 58 RMB during dinner. If you just want to pig out on Western food in Chengdu for a low price, this is the place to go.

5) Cabral Brazilian BBQ 卡布罗尔巴西烤肉View In Map
This place gets mixed reviews among the ex-pat community in Chengdu. I put it on here because of the quality of the meat here. The barbequed fried veggies are decent as well. However, the French fries, while okay if you salt them, are soggy and flawed texturally. And the salad is trash.

The good aspects of this Chengdu Brazilian BBQ are that the customer service is excellent and the meat is presented perfectly. Glistening meat kebab after glistening meat kebab arrives and you can choose to take as much as you like. The bacon, lamb and chicken wings are particularly a treat here.
