Rock on: The 2012 Zebra Music Festival is Back!

The short winter days have become a thing of the past and spring is starting to fill the air. And with that, one particular yearning has been awaked in the music-loving expat: the Zebra Music Festival. China has become a spawning ground for dozens upon dozens of music festivals – some better than others – but only a handful have truly made a name for themselves; Zebra Music Festival (热波音乐节) has established itself  as one of them.  Now in its fourth year, Zebra has begun to venture further afield in the search of greener pastures, with events also held in Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai. However, loyal to its natural habitat, the major event is still in Chengdu as always where three days of music and mayhem awaits Zebra’s followers.

The Lineup

Back with a vengeance, this year’s lineup includes top class acts from China and abroad. Stretched over three days from April 29th to May 1st at 198 Poly Park, this year’s international headliners include Smegma Riot (Italy), Nasser and Tahiti 80 (France), Backyard Surgeons (Australia) and Useless ID (Israel) among others. A number of notable domestic acts are also performing including Chengdu’s very own Proximity Butterfly, Mr.Chelonian, Tong Dang and Mosaic. According to festival organizers, this year’s pop fix will come in the form of Mainland boyground Top Combine and Taiwanese-American R&B singer/actor Stanley Huang.  The list doesn’t end here; see the full line-up below.

Music with a cause

Entertaining thousands of revellers is one thing, but turning a large-scale event into one that also draws attention to note-worthy causes is something much more commendable. Aware of its wide-reaching influence on a diverse and large audience, the festival will have a special zone in which a number of prominent NGOs and environmental organizations will have booths, including the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Shanshui Conservation Center, CNature, CUPF and Animals Asia Foundation. Also, as in previous years, Zebra Music Festival is embracing the slogan “I care” to commemorate the victims of the Sichuan Earthquake.

The theme

This year’s overall festival theme is “Play Music”, a slogan which symbolises the festival’s aim to get everyone involved in the music-making process; festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own guitars and start jamming, thus creating an interactive carnival-style atmosphere.

Other events/entertainment

Besides watching live bands, festival-goers can also enjoy a number of fun events such as extreme sports (BMX and skateboarding shows), African drumming, body painting, parkour, an arts and crafts market, soccer, a photo exhibition and more. Also, there’ll be several different zones in the festival grounds, including one for food, camping and outdoor film screenings.
