For those who love music in a big way, this four day Chengdu festival is not to be missed. This year, the Big Love Chengdu Music Festival (大爱成都音乐节) boasts an unprecedented and powerful line-up of some of the biggest performers on the scene. Pop-fans rejoice; the festival will have a stage reserved only for pop music. Held at the Chengdu International Intangible Cultural Heritage Park on June 21-June24, the festival is truly an experience for fans of music. Apart from an extraordinary musical journey, the festival offers camping, shopping, food, art and of course, a whole lotta love.
The Stages
First of all, there are four of them. This means you can jump around to rock music one minute and shake it to electronic the next. The stages will feature pop, rock, electronic and local Chengdu music. Each stage will have different light effects and the party will rock from 13:00 to 1:00. The music won't stop until the hills of Chengdu echo with dubstep.
Other events/entertainment
The International Intangible Cultural Heritage Park, where the Big Love Music Festival will be held, is a massive 1780-acre park with room for hundreds of thousands of people to come watch the performances. Attendees can take part in special interactive performances with a Russian dance company, a Scottish bagpipe group and an African drumming ensemble. Festivalgoers can watch graffiti artists or take part in a Cosplay show. The park has areas for food, a crafts market and information and reception spaces. Travellers are invited to camp on-site; there is room for tens of thousands of fans to stay over in the park.

The bands
The exciting line-up for this four day festival has some powerful performers. More than 100 domestic and international artists will flock to Chengdu for this almost week long jam session. Super-star performers from the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Europe and the United States will be featured. 100 artists means 100 concerts (each about 45 to 150 long) in four days, a music lovers dream come true.
International acts
Ash: Hailing from Northern Ireland, Ash has been a staple on the European alternative rock scene for the last two decades. From their start in 1992, The three-man grunge band has sold 8 million albums. Their indie rock songs have been featured in movies including Jackie Chan's Rumble in the Bronx, Shaun of the Dead and American Pie: Return to Band Camp. The band has toured with Weezer and has collaborated with Chris Martin from Coldplay. Their performance at the Big Love festival is part of their current tour for their new EP Little Infinity, released June 16. The tour will start in Belfast, Ireland in a sold-out venue, include shows in the UK, China and Korea and end back in the United Kingdom in York.
Blue: The boy band from England that will get you dancing, Blue boasts an incredible resume of pop hits. After breaking up in 2005, the band reunited in 2009. Blue performed in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 in Germany coming in 11th with their song "I Can." In 2001, their single "Too Close," reached the #1 spot on the UK Singles chart. In their long career, Blue has collaborated with icons including Elton John and Stevie Wonder. The four members are currently working on their newest album alongside musical icons Bruno Mars and Ne-Yo and gearing up for a huge come-back.
Suede: Suede is an English band (known as the London Suede in the USA) that helped inspired the entire Britpop movement. The indie band received praise from critics in their early years because of their unique and daring sound and was often called the start of a new music movement. Their first self-titled album was released in 1993 and hit the top of the British charts selling over 100,000 copies in its first week. The group experienced relative fame in the next decade and released four more albums but went on hiatus in 2006.
Suede reunited in 2010 at a cancer benefit concert in London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then, the band has continued to tour and play their early hits at venues including USA's Coachella Valley Festival, London O2's Brixton Academy and a 2011 Asian tour in spots including Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea, ending at the Summer Sonic festival in Tokyo. In 2012, Suede begun to showcase new songs and is working on a highly anticipated new album.
Extreme: Extreme is an American hard rock and funk metal band. Frontmen Gary and Nuno Bettencourt draw inspiration from Led Zeppelin, Queen and Aerosmith and performed at the 1992 Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert. The band had great success in the early 1990s grunge scene and sold over 10 million records over the decade. The band broke up in 1996 as Cherone joined Van Halen and Bettencourt embarked on solo projects ending with a tour with Rihanna. Extreme played a few small venues in 2006, but the Chengdu Big Love Music Festival is the official end to the band's hiatus followed by a larger tour in Japan.
Domestic acts
New Pants (新裤子): New Pants came on the scene as one of China's most dynamic and creative punk-electro-rock bands. The band has played at the famous Coachella Music Festival in California as well as New York and other prominent cities in the West. Often featuring cheeky, animated visuals in their performances, New Pants are one of the most successful Chinese bands both domestically and internationally.
Tang Dynasty (唐朝乐队): Tang Dynasty is known as one of the most famous rock bands in China and China's first heavy metal rock band. Their debut album, "Tang Dynasty," in 1991, is still a popular choice for rock fans throughout China. The era following the "Tang Dynasty" album together with Black Panther's debut album is seen as the Golden Age of Chinese rock and roll.
Hanggai (杭盖): Hanggai, founded in 2004, is the most famous Mongolian band on today's international music stage. The group has travelled to over 40 countries and given almost 250 performances. In 2011, Hanggai were the only performers from China to play in the world famous Bonnaroo Music Festival in the USA. The band was also invited to perform in Asia's largest rock music festival, Fuji Rock.
Xie Tianxiao a.k.a. XTX (谢天笑): XTX is known as the new Chinese godfather of rock and roll. In 1997, XTX and Li Ming (李明) started the band Cold-Blooded Animal (冷血动物). Between 2001-2004 the band was invited to perform at the world renowned South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Texas in the United States twice and also performed in the Mendocino Music Festival near San Francisco. In May 2006, XTX invited by the Italian Government to represent China and perform in the "Italy and China Culture Year," celebration.
Cui Jian (崔健): Cui Jian is known as a Godfather of Chinese rock and roll and is most famous for his song "Nothing (一无所有)." In 1989, he his concert in the Beijing Exhibition Center, "New Long March (新长征路上的摇滚)," rocked the capital in a sensational performance which later got him and all large scale rock concerts banned by the authorities. The same year, Cui Jian performed in the Asian Popular Music Awards held in London, England in the Royal Albert Hall and in the Paris Bourges Spring Arts Festival.
Wild Children (野孩子乐队): Wild Children were and remain one of the most influential and legendary folk bands in China. Founded by Lanzhou natives Zhang Quan and Xiao Suo in 1995, the band was the catalyst that popularized northwestern folk rock in China. Members Zhang Weiwei on the accordion and percussionist Guo Long later joined the group. The band witnessed its share of trials and tribulations, but the ultimate blow came when founder Xiao Suo died of cancer in 2004. This year, Zhang Quan, Guo long and Zhang Weiwei will re-unite in what is set to be a very special and highly anticipated performance.
